Will You Have Blood On Your Hands?
Okay, I am going to do it. I have thought about it, tried to tell myself I didn't need to, but the truth of the matter is I cannot keep silent. I must share with you the truth. Did you know that today 120,000 babies died at the hands of their parents? It is amazing to me that when 9/11 happened American's were outraged. I remember it so well. I was 8 months pregnant with James. I was in town that day for a midwife appointment. Everywhere I went that day, that week, and for months afterwards people were talking about the atrocity....nearly 3,000 died that day. Please don't get me wrong, the loss of life of those in the Twin Towers, the airplanes, the emergency service workers, etc is a terrible tragedy. But what I wonder is why are we in a constant outrage for the 120,000 children being murdered daily in our country? What is even more concerning to me is the fact that many Christians have blood on their hands.
Now that I have your attention I want to share a few things that are on my heart. We are drawing ever so near to another election for President of the United States of America. As a US citizen I take voting very seriously. I have family members that have fought for our freedoms. I am thankful the Lord has placed me in a country that allows me the freedom to vote for civil magistrates, to bear arms, to worship the Lord. But my true allegiance does not lie with America. My allegiance is to a Heavenly Kingdom, my eternal home. As a Christian my decision on whom I should vote and how I should live must be based on God's law, not man's.
God's Law or Man's Law
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience.
(Romans 13:1-5 ESV)
I often hear Christians quoting Romans 13:1-5 when it comes to how we should be in subjection to our governing authorities. I do agree that we are to be subject to the governing authorities, but we must also consider Acts 5:29 where Peter continued to preach even when the high priest commanded him to stop. What was Peter's response?
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
(Acts 5:29-32 ESV)
Over and over we see in Scripture that when God's law and man's law are in conflict we are always to obey God's law. God's law is supreme. The civil government was put in place by God. He instituted three realms of government, family, church and civil. Each has a duty. The duty of the civil government is to punish the evildoers and praise the righteous. If our civil magistrate is in turn punishing the righteous and praising the evildoers, we must do as Peter and the apostles and obey God, even when that is not popular, easy or comfortable.
Does It Really Matter
You may be like many I have heard recently. The story goes something like this, "but if I don't vote for Romney, Obama will get re-elected and our country will continue down this terrible spiral." Or maybe your story is, "Well there are only two choices, I am picking the lesser of two evils." How about this one," Romney is not that bad, I mean, in comparison to Obama." I have even heard the statement that we "all worship the same god anyway." Or my favorite...well if God doesn't want Romney in He can always choose that, but I am going to do my part in keeping Obama from being elected.
Friends, the answers to these previous statements are a blog post in and of itself. I want to lay a few thoughts before you and then leave you to think and pray about what God would have you to do come November 2.
- God's Word is sufficient for every area of life. If you don't believe in the sufficiency of Scripture, then how can you trust in God for your salvation. His Word is Truth!
- God cares who you vote for. In Romans 13 we read that we are subject to the governing authorities, and that those authorities are placed in power by God.
- Our civil magistrates are God's servants for our good. (Romans 13:4) If they are servants of God, shouldn't we vote only for wise, Godly servants?
- Do you place your trust in God's omnipotence or your own power? If you truly believe that God is all-powerful then vote, or don't vote, accordingly.
Blood On Your Hands
I will not get into all the details of why I will not vote for Romney. I will say that I will not vote for a non-Christian cult member (click here for more information about what Romney really believes as an LDS), profoundly pro-abortion, proponent of government healthcare and regulation. I will leave you with this video paid for by the Romney/Ryan campaign.
